SDRC Assistive Technologies Loan Program

Supporting the academic pursuits of students with disabilities across The Claremont College community.

Dragon Naturally Speaking

The SDRC has developed an Assistive Technology Loan Program aimed at helping you better succeed in your classes. We offer a variety of resources available to all 7cs, one of them being Dragon Naturally Speaking. For more information about this great program or any training videos, please see below.

What is Dragon Naturally Speaking?

Dragon Naturally Speaking software is a speech recognition program that allows the user to speak into a microphone on a computer with the software translating the spoken words into text. With this software, typing isn’t necessary and the user can do away with a keyboard. You may use this dictation process to write papers, essays, etc. in Word.
What are the features?
The software has three primary areas of functionality: voice recognition in dictation with speech transcribed as written text, recognition of spoken commands, and text-to-speech: speaking text content of a document.

Is there a tutorial I can watch to better learn how to use the dictation software?

Yes, please follow the link below to view an online tutorial that will show you all of the basics on how to create your own user profile and navigate all of the features.

How do I request a LiveScribe Pen?

Should you want to request a license for Dragon Naturally Speaking, you will need to speak with your home campus disability coordinator. If you do not know who your campus coordinator is, please follow the link below for their contact information.

What comes with the license?

Once you are approved for this accommodation, the SDRC will provide a new student/teacher edition of Dragon Naturally Speaking. Inside the box will include the DVD download, instructions, and a recording headset.

Will there be a charge to check-out Dragon Naturally Speaking?

No, there is no charge to check-out the license from the SDRC.

Is Dragon Naturally Speaking compatible with all computers?

Unfortunately, at this time Dragon Naturally Speaking is not compatible with Mac computers. If you have a PC that does not have a CD drive, the SDRC can assist you with the download process.

How do I pick up the license due to COVID-19 restrictions?

Upon being approved for this accommodation, the SDRC can have the license mailed to your home directly. Please contact the SDRC directly atsdrc@claremont.eduor (909)607-7419 to get yours!
