Measles in the U.S.: What to do before spring break
Measles cases and outbreaks are increasing nationally. The CDC has reported over 1,000 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. in 2026. Measles spreads easily, and vaccination remains the best protection.
What we’re asking you to do now
- Confirm your MMR vaccination status. Most people are considered protected if they have received two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
- Students: If you’re unsure of your status or need the vaccine, please contact Student Health Services (SHS) through your Online Health Portal.
- Staff and faculty: If you’re unsure of your status or need the vaccine, please contact your healthcare provider (or local pharmacy) to review records and receive MMR if needed.
- Traveling for spring break? Plan to be vaccinated at least two weeks before travel. If your trip is sooner and you’re not protected, one dose is still recommended—get vaccinated as soon as possible.
About the vaccine
Two doses of MMR are about 97% effective and have a long-standing safety record. If you were vaccinated between 1963–1967, you may have received an inactivated measles vaccine; talk with your healthcare provider about whether you should be revaccinated.
If you may have been exposed or develop symptoms
If you develop symptoms such as fever, cough/runny nose/red eyes, and then a rash, call SHS/your healthcare provider.
Stay informed
For updates and guidance, please refer to reputable public health sources, including the CDC and local health departments. By staying vigilant and ensuring vaccinations are up to date, we can collectively prevent the spread of measles within our community.

SHS UPDATES
MMR Vaccination Requirement
To help keep our campus community healthy, all students are required to have documentation of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine on file with Student Health Services.
Measles is a highly contagious illness, and recent outbreaks in the United States highlight the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage, especially in close-contact settings like college campuses.
Most students and staff have already received the MMR vaccine earlier in life. This requirement simply ensures that records are up to date and that our community is protected.
Students should provide documentation of two doses of MMR vaccine or approved medical exemption documentation, as permitted by law.
If you have questions, or need access to vaccination, Student Health Services is here to support you.
Secure Your Journey A-head
Our consortium naturally magnetizes those who love to be free and in nature. So naturally, bike and scooter accidents make up the greatest number of acute visits to our clinic. A helmet is the best way to protect yourself from concussion and traumatic brain injury. We encourage all our students to brace for impact with a helmet.
Education Abroad
Education Abroad is such a vibrant semester experience for so many of our students and our SHS staff would love to help launch you on your journey abroad. Plan to book a physical, update vaccines and get needed forms for a seamless start to your travels!

Fall 2025 COVID Update
Dear Undergraduate Students, With the beginning of another academic year now upon us, Student Health Services would like to provide some guidance on COVID-19. As of August 2025, the omicron variant has been replaced with current subvariants, including XFG, aka “Stratus,” and NB.1.8.1, aka “Nimbus”. These subvariants continue to cause COVID-19 infections nationwide. Thanks to immunization practices and other health measures, the burden of this disease in terms of severe illness, hospitalization, and death continues to diminish. While we are awaiting the final recommendations for this year’s seasonal COVID-19 immunization from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, we want to remind students about the following: [...]
