Spring 2022 Update

Dear 7C Students, While we have remained hopeful that COVID-19 would continue to recede, unfortunately as you are likely aware, we are in the midst of another surge with the rapid spread of COVID-19 due primarily to the Omicron variant. The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is highly transmissible, and we expect to see cases and transmission on campus. Thankfully though, most cases due to the Omicron variant are milder, especially in those who are fully vaccinated or up to date with their booster. Boosters are effective and should help in limiting the spread, as will the use of upgraded masking (surgical masks or respirators such as N95/KN95/KF94). We encourage you to be aware and follow your campus’ guidelines for returning. These community messages with important details are linked here: Pomona College Claremont Graduate University Scripps College Claremont McKenna College Harvey Mudd College Pitzer College Keck Graduate Institute Student Health Services (SHS) is committed to supporting students for a safe, healthy and mentally fulfilling in-person experience. As we continue to respond to the evolving nature of our pandemic, medical resources continue to be strained. This semester, students will notice differences in SHS as well as contact tracing operations. SHS visits will [...]

COVID-19 Boosters

Dear 7C students, Earlier today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration amended the emergency use authorizations (EUA) for both the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines authorizing use of a single booster dose for all individuals 18 years of age and older after completion of primary vaccination with any FDA-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices also universally endorsed these Pfizer and Moderna booster doses for all individuals 18 years of age and older. I anticipate CDC Director Rochelle Walensky will soon sign off on these recommendations so that booster doses will be available across the U.S. as early as this weekend. J&J booster doses had already been previously authorized for all individuals 18 and older. Here, in California, the state has already moved forward with booster shots available for everyone 18 and older. To book your booster shot or find a walk-in clinic, visit My Turn. These updated recommendations are coming from ongoing studies and data which shows that while completing a primary series with any of the three currently authorized/approved COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. remains extremely effective in preventing hospitalization and severe disease from COVID-19, protection against mild [...]

Respiratory Illness on Campus

Dear TCC students, Our Fall 2021 semester is well under way and so far, things have gone remarkably well from a campus health perspective. COVID-19 case rates have stayed low on campus and in those rare instances of a positive COVID-19 case, there has been very little to no transmission amongst the identified close contacts. While this is very welcome news, I would caution against letting our guard down and becoming complacent with the proper hygiene and social distancing mitigating factors which have helped get us here. While currently on the downturn, this pandemic continues to rage on and LA County is still experiencing substantial transmission. Locally on our campuses, after over two weeks of not picking up any COVID-19 student cases with our saliva screening testing, this week we have already seen seven new student cases. This is yet another reminder that while we are able to safely return to an in-person campus experience, it is highly contingent upon continued best practices from everyone on campus. Other than COVID-19, SHS continues to see students for a variety of other respiratory ailments, such as common colds, strep throat and infectious mononucleosis (“mono”). The mechanisms of spread for these other respiratory [...]

Fall 2021 Update

Dear 7C Students, After more than 16 months away due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the eager moment where students can finally return to our beautiful campuses is finally upon us. We, here at Student Health Services (SHS), have been working diligently with various stakeholders across the 7Cs to ensure that our campuses are ready for you. Our planning began with great optimism as the efficacy of currently authorized vaccines started becoming clear. Even as our community now faces the delta variant, data so far points to continued great protection from these vaccines against serious illness, hospitalization, and death. Without these vaccines, I am not certain we could have even attempted to have students return for in-person instruction. Public health regulations continue to evolve and impact our operations constantly, in response to local conditions. Currently, SHS is planning for a limited schedule for student appointments during the week of August 16th with normal operational schedule resuming the week of August 23rd. Starting August 16th, single dose J&J COVID vaccination will be available for students who still need to get vaccinated before the Fall session starts. Appointments will be conducted in-person unless a phone visit is specifically requested by the student. As a [...]
